Arizona Completely Dominated By UCLA's Interior Offense

Feb 26, 2011 10:08 PM

UCLA defeated No. 10 Arizona by a convincing 71-49 margin on Saturday.

The Bruins scored 51 of their 71 points inside the paint.

“We need a few days to regroup,” UA coach Sean Miller said. “This trip (the fourth time Arizona was swept in L.A. in the last six years) taught us some lessons. … We played a team (UCLA) that is playing at a high level. We need to play at a high level.”

Arizona had no answers for UCLA’s frontcourt players Reeves Nelson, Tyler Honeycutt and Joshua Smith. The trio combined for 59 of UCLA’s points on 23-of-36 shooting from the field.

Smith, a freshman center, had 17 points, four rebounds, a career-high three assists, and one blocked shot. He shot 7-for-11 from the field.

Nelson, a sophomore power forward, finished with a career-high 25 points

Vucevic is averaging 19.3 points and 10.9 rebounds in Pac-10 games while shooting 53.6 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from 3-point range. He's scored at least 25 points four different times.

Kerr: UA?s Williams Will Be 20-Point NBA Scorer

Feb 24, 2011 10:16 AM

Where does Arizona star Derrick Williams rank among pro prospects? Right at the top, according to Steve Kerr.

Kerr said Williams was "not on the Kobe level" but would be a 20-point average NBA player.

"He’s probably a top five pick looking at this year’s draft, and it’s tough to pass up that kind of money," Kerr said. "But every player has to develop his own desires and needs. If money is an issue then he should come out. On the other hand, Sean Elliott stayed and Michael Jordan stayed until his junior year. Very rarely does it happen where a guy that highly thought of actually drops down but what did happen in the past was guys got better by staying and they had better pro careers. That's something they don’t think about.

"The only question is what position he’ll play," Kerr said. "A lot of people say he’s got to learn the three (small forward). I disagree. There’s a lot of smaller guys playing the four and he's versatile enough to handle the ball. So if you play him at the four, he can cause problems for people and he's so good around the basket."

O?Neill: Derrick Williams Most Protected Since Jordan

Feb 23, 2011 10:19 AM

Prior to facing Arizona, USC Coach Kevin O'Neill called Derrick Williams “the most protected dude since Michael Jordan.”

O'Neill was referring to how Williams leads the nation in free-throw attempts per game (9.2), and compared him to Jordan, who in his NBA career received so much star treatment from officials that conspiracy theories ran rampant. (Jordan averaged 8.2 free throws during his 15-year NBA career.)

"If the guy walks across the court, it's a foul," O'Neill said.

Efficiency Of Derrick Williams Keys Arizona?s Offense

Feb 21, 2011 10:29 AM

Derrick Williams, a 6-7, 210 pound small forward, is shooting 63.1 percent from the field and 67.5 percent from beyond the arc.

With his knack for drawing fouls, Williams is on track to set UA records for free throws attempted and free throws made, and he's on pace to crush Steve Kerr's three-point percentage mark of 57.3 percent.

At his current pace, Williams will also finish eighth on UA's all- time single-season scoring list with 650.

What's most impressive about the scoring mark, is that the highly efficient Williams isn't likely to finish anywhere close to the top 10 lists in field goals or field-goal attempts.
